As you already know, ESRA is recently going through important organizational changes which should make the Society more open and democratic.
The most important change is the abandonment of the concept of ESRA Zones. Instead of several countries packed in one Zone, ESRA will be transformed into a Roof Organization of National Societies with an ESRA Council and an ESRA Board.
From 2010 on, the new ESRA Council would consist of ESRA representatives elected by ESRA Members of every European National Society of Regional Anaesthesia. The minimum of ESRA Members necessary for the participation on ESRA Council is 30 Active and /or Life members. ESRA Council members will than elect ESRA Board members as well as Members of Executive Board (President, Secretary, Treasurer etc).
SARA, the Swiss Association of Regional Anaesthesia was founded on December 13, 2008 in Zurich. According to the conditions given by ESRA the Society has written bylaws, clear organizational structures and is open to non ESRA Members too. At least one National Meeting on Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy should be held every year.
Since Switzerland has more than 60 ESRA members, it fulfils the criteria for sending their own representative on ESRA Council.
By June 9, 2010, the ESRA Secretary General, José de Andres was formally adressed by the President of the SARA for ESRA affiliation.
